I don’t like the idea if leaving a bad review for a charity but my recent experience at the Shelter shop in Eastbourne left me disgusted and deeply disappointed.
A couple of weeks ago during a shopping visit to the Shelter shop in Eastbourne, I unknowingly when taking my purse out dropped a bag of vintage buttons (in individual sachets) which I had just bought in another charity shop. I only noticed they were missing when I got home later in the evening. I called the Shelter shop the next day to see if they had been found and was told ‘No’.

I went back to the shop this week and lo and behold all MY buttons were there still in the same sachets and in a basket for Sale. So much for saying they hadn’t been found. They hadn’t even bothered to put their own ‘Shelter’ price tags on.

So obviously I raised this with the volunteer and the manager. What followed was so disgusting that another member of the public asked what was going on. I was really upset and felt ‘robbed’ there was no effort whatsoever to see my point of view even though I could tell them the exact number of sachets and prove they came from another shop. The attitude from the volunteer was really offensive I can’t remember her exact words but it was definitely in the vein of finders keepers!

I know some may say they were only buttons but actually the buttons themselves are irrelevant (although to me they were vintage and hard to find but its the behaviour I take issue with. I ACCIDENTLY DROPPED the bag and I CALLED the very next day.

Surely this doesn’t give a shop (charity or not) the right to just claim any lost property? The staff treated me appallingly, not at all charitable. This has left such a bitter taste I will never go back or donate to Shelter again.

Our neighbour wanted to donate to the Shelter shop in Eastbourne and unlike so many of the other so-called needy charities that make every excuse not to collect. When we called Terry, Shelter's driver, he said that he was in the centre of Eastbourne and that he would be with our neighbour within 10 minutes. He arrived as promised and was very helpful . If anyone wishes to donate, this particular charity is clearly one that acts promptly and is interested in obtaining goods for their recipients.. Congratulations on the superb service.
