Farmers’ Market Meets Honest Cooking

Had lunch today at The Goods Shed, a rustic restaurant set inside a lively indoor farmers’ market in Canterbury—and the experience was both charming and satisfying.

As soon as we ordered, the starters and bread arrived quickly. The mussels in lovage cream were a real highlight—incredibly fresh and flavorful, with a light herbaceous sauce that brought out the natural sweetness of the shellfish. The grilled squid was equally impressive, tender with just the right amount of char, paired beautifully with a zesty green sauce. These dishes set the tone for a promising meal.

The complimentary bread was served warm and fresh—simple, but comforting. However, there was a bit of a wait (around 30 minutes) before the mains arrived.

But the wait was worth it for the lamb leg. Cooked to perfection, it was beautifully tender and melt-in-the-mouth, accompanied by a creamy cauliflower purée and cauliflower salad that balanced the richness of the meat.

On the other hand, the brandade fishcake was a bit underwhelming—mild in flavor and lacking the depth I had hoped for.

The real charm of The Goods Shed isn’t just in the food—it’s the whole atmosphere. You’re dining inside a working farmers’ market, surrounded by local produce, cheeses, artisan bread, and specialty stalls. After your meal, a stroll through the market is a must—it feels like part of the experience.

✅ A great spot for families, couples, or friends looking to enjoy seasonal food with a sense of place. Highly recommended for those who love fresh, local, and honestly prepared food in a warm, market-style setting.

Nestled within the lively atmosphere of the farmers’ market, this restaurant is a true hidden gem. It perfectly captures the charm of British market dining—casual yet full of character, with a wonderful sense of ease amidst the bustling surroundings.

The service is warm and attentive, making you feel right at home. The food? Simply outstanding. Every dish is crafted with the freshest ingredients, sourced straight from the market next door. There’s no gap between the stalls and your plate—just top-quality produce, skillfully prepared by talented chefs.

Yes, the prices are a bit on the higher side, but trust me, it’s worth every penny. An absolute must-visit!

A fabulous restaurant set in the heart of an atmospheric market a short walk from Canterbury centre. The team were excellent, warm and knowledgeable. The food was exciting with a delicious showcasing seasonal ingredients - it was a menu that I would have happily ordered everything from. To top it off, they serve my favourite beer - Small Beer. Thank you for a super lunch Team Goods Shed.

Loved the food and wine here. Service was excellent too. Sat on the mini-mezzanine level above the shop floor but didn’t feel isolated. Atmosphere had a good buzz and didn’t feel rushed into leaving either.

Solid five stars, thanks to an original menu with all fresh and local produce, sold as well by the farmers inside this atmospheric renovated warehouse by the railroads (no noise or tremors from the passing carriages). We particularly loved the Jerusalem artichoke and the pasta with crab. You have to visit this place when in Canterbury!

Amazing restaurant and beautiful local produce market! The food at the restaurant was really fancy and absolutely delicious! Every meal was a real experience! They use local and seasonal ingredients sourced directly from the market. We ordered a 3-course meal which was definitely pricey but perfect for a celebration or special occasion. The staff a very attentive and very well organised. Booking a table is best as it gets very busy. The market is also very charming with fresh local veg, fish, meat, juice, cheese and other wonderful finds. Highly recommend and can't wait to be back!
